Table Tennis Tournament Formats & How to Run One
Updated August 18, 2026 · 5 min read
Table tennis events run a lot like pickleball tournaments, with a few sport-specific choices around scoring and table assignment. This guide covers the formats that work best and how to keep matches moving across your tables.
Best formats for table tennis
A group stage → knockout is the classic choice: players are split into round-robin groups, guaranteeing several matches each, and the top finishers advance to a single-elimination knockout. For smaller fields, a straight round robin or single elimination works well. See our full formats comparison.
Scoring
Games are to 11 points, win by 2, and matches are usually best of 5 (first to 3 games) or best of 7 for later rounds. Decide the match length per stage so the schedule holds.
Seeding and the draw
Seed by rating or recent results so the top players are spread across the draw, or run a random draw if you don't track ratings. Read how to seed a bracket for the details.
Table assignment and flow
Tell the system how many tables you have and it queues matches across them, starting the next ready match as each table frees up. That keeps players informed about where and when they play — no crowding around a printed draw sheet.
